The Beam · Working in the AI Age

Your next
career experiment.

Start with your strengths. Compare two directions. Choose one small experiment that helps you make a better decision.

Allow 20–30 minutes to get started, then revisit after your conversations and practice. No signup required.

Start with your life

Describe the work you want and the limits your experiment needs to respect.

List three strengths and one example that demonstrates each.

Consider screen time, movement, independence, teamwork, location and schedule.

Time available, training cost, income needs and responsibilities. General notes are enough.

Compare two possible paths

Use actual evidence. A path may be a job, a different way of building software or a small service business.

Name the work, what appeals to you and what you would need to learn.

Name a realistic alternative and the tradeoffs you want to compare.

Record five current job postings or customer conversations, source links and dates. Note repeated requirements.

Plan two practitioner or customer conversations. Ask about a normal day, entry requirements and common misconceptions.

Design a 30-day experiment

Choose something small, safe and useful enough to help you decide. A learning activity is not a professional qualification.

Example: Do I enjoy hardware troubleshooting enough to explore data-center technician roles?

Choose a learning module, a supervised visit, a small practice app or an agreed customer pilot.

Set a weekly time budget and a maximum cost before starting.

A skills map, practitioner feedback, a tested prototype or a measured improvement—not just a certificate.

Week 1: research. Week 2: conversations. Week 3: practice. Week 4: review.

Make the next decision

Return to these questions at the end of your experiment. Setting a path aside can be a useful outcome.

Choose a date and, if useful, someone to discuss the evidence with.

What gave you energy? What was harder than expected? Which assumptions changed?

Choose one, explain why and name your next specific action.

Start blank? Print before filling it in. This is a planning aid, not a career assessment or a promise of employment.
